Building a Website: From a Non-Techie
Isabella CarrI never really knew how hard it was to create a good website. I'm using Shopify, and while the platform allows you to quickly set up a functional site, making it unique takes a ton of work.
I’m not a tech wiz whatsoever. I am terrible with computers, but despite that, I am determined to create the a website that I'm proud of.
My goals are to build a site that is easy to use and navigate while still being eye-catching and informative. I want visitors to quickly understand what my business is about, what I offer, and how they can engage with my work. More importantly, I want my website to reflect me because I am my brand.
There have been many moments when I consider hiring a professional to design my website. But the thought is always pushed away because, first … it's expensive, and second, finding someone who truly understands my vision feels like more work than just doing it myself.
So how am I creating the website that reflects me? Research and lots of it. I heavily rely on Google searches, Shopify forums, YouTube tutorials, and even AI-generated coding and advice. There is a new Ai helper built into Shopify and I've found it a little helpful, but I think thats because I ask the wrong questions. Anyway, I use every resource available to find the answers and codes I need.
It’s been a challenging process, but every time I sit back down to fix up the website it gets closer to what I envision. And honestly, there’s something rewarding about figuring it out on my own.
For anyone creating a website I highly suggest OnHOW Youtube channel. It has helped me out so much. Also posting in the Shopify community forums. Don't be afraid to ask for help everyone is very nice and knowledgeable on there! And make sure to be a good member and thumbs up the answers that have helped you. It not only makes the forum better, but it also helps out the partners who answer the questions.
